• The care of the vines

We want to share a master class by our colleague Fernando on the work he does in our vineyards in order to obtain the maximum quality in them.

    • Balanced winter pruning, leaving 5-6 spurs per vine with two frank canes per spur, which guarantees a balanced production in each vine as well as an optimal distribution of the fruit that favors the separation between the bunches ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. We carry out this operation late in March to avoid spring frosts as much as possible.
    • Pruning or green pruning allows us to correct winter pruning errors and eliminate “suckers” (buds that do not come out of the spur, come out of the trunk or arms) that compete with our grape producing buds. This way we guarantee a homogeneous maturation of the vines. This operation is carried out in the months of June and July.
    • Basal leaf removal of the vine to present well ventilated bunches with optimal solar lighting. This guarantees more optimal conditions to avoid pests and diseases. Operation that we carry out at the beginning of August.
    • Grape thinning only carried out the necessary years to guarantee a good balance between fruit and vegetation and thus obtain a complete ripening of the grape. This operation would be carried out the second half of August, when the grapes are finishing ripening.

Mechanical and manual harvest after an exhaustive monitoring of maturation to determine the optimal harvest time.

  • Harvest 2019

A few weeks ago, Emma Villajos, our Bodegas Valdelacierva winemaker, started at the vineyards, the control of the ripening of the grapes, in view of the coming 2019 harvest. After the recent pictures of the Grenache singular vineyard de Garnacha at Finca Montepedriza state, today we have travelled to Baños de Ebro in order to do an evaluation of the Valdelacierva crianza vineyards.
The begining of the harvest goes according to plan and it seems quite promising. Extremely balanced with good phenolic maturity due to the balanced load of the bunches. If the weather holds on and there isn’t any last minute scare, it could be a menorable harvest in Rioja.

  • Viña Gormaz selected by James Suckling

Viña Gormaz, the wine from Ribera del Duero, Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz has been chosen by one of the most influential critics in the world of wine in his annual Spanish wine tasting. James Suckling has given 92 points to Viña Gormaz Crianza and 91 points to Viña Gormaz Roble. Viña Gormaz, wine from San Esteban de Gormaz, adds another award and makes noise as 12 Linajes, range that keeps getting prizes and good comments among the experts in the world of wine.

The excellent job of the winemaker María José García in Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz has one formula: quality, excellence and teamwork. “In our winery we make an effort so that each bottle has the essence of our vineyards, which are from old vines in Soria, with a complexity not only in terms of its age, quality and richness of the terroirs, but also because of the peculiarity of its great variety of soils and microclimates. This is something we like to put a value on because it is unique in the production of Spanish wines. Every path has been a challenge, but receiving high scores as 93 points in Wine Enthusiast, among “Editor’s Choice” in our 12 Linajes Reserva, motivate us on keep working” declared recently María José about her philosophy in the winery.

  • Wine tasting with Víctor de la Serna from El Mundo

Víctor de la Serna, one of the most important journalists in Spain and one of the most prestigious gatsronomic critics in the country has dedicated his column to the project of our wineries: Valdelacierva (Rioja) and Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz (Ribera del Duero). The article translated:

Make less wine, but much better.

Hispanobodegas, the winery group founded a couple of years ago with wineries in Rioja (Valdelacierva), Ribera del Duero (Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz) and Rueda (Bodegas GarciGrande), is evolving in an interesting way within the current Spanish landscape: initially designed for the high production of mid-range wines, it is now drifting towards wines from the terroir, from plots, and focusing on personality. A tasting of the latest wines from the wineries in Rioja and Ribera del Duero confirms that they are on the right track.

It is enough to see that between Valdelacierva and Gormaz – the former cooperative of San Esteban de Gormaz, privatised in 2004 – they control more than 400 hectares of land. This accounts for its initial high-volume intentions, which is the case with many Spanish wineries in these two denominations, not to mention the bulk and supermarket wine areas of the southern half.

As the owners explain, the group is trying to diversify, reduce production and increase the level of quality and price. However, the company is not doing this in the style of the 90s – nor even the early 2000s – by basing it on luxurious oak wines, but instead opting for an in-depth study of its own excellent wine-growing heritage, in order to identify the vines with potential, finesse and personality. This is achieved through a careful study of their soils and orientations, whose grapes are assembled in ‘cuvées’ of modest size, or in some cases produced from a single plot.

Valdelacierva, based in Navarrete, has the essentials of its vineyards in Sonsierra and Rioja Alavesa, although it has just acquired old plots of Grenache in Tudelilla. Gormaz, which is the most eastern, highest and coldest part of Ribera, has vineyards in places that are now gaining popularity, such as Atauta or Alcubilla de Avellaneda. Garcigrande, as they explained to us, is only in the first steps of that reconversion.

Two women direct the oenological tasks and, from what we have seen, the control of the wine-growing: Emma Villajos Barja in Valdelacierva and María José García Moreno in Gormaz. Their styles are similar: delicacy in the treatment of the grape, little extraction and little submission to the new oak.

We will have to keep an eye on this company, because for us, it seems like a good model for a reconversion towards the quality and the terroir of the unbalanced Spanish wine industry.

From the Rioja winery, we have been very impressed by the delicate Valdelacierva Grano a Grano, a Tempranillo from the Finca La Botija in Baños de Ebro, whose grapes are completely destemmed by hand to keep them whole and culminate in an impeccable intracellular maceration. We also enjoyed the fresh Valdelacierva Garnacha, from 75-year old vines in the Finca La Pedriza de Tudelilla.

Gormaz, under its 12 Linajes brand, also makes a remarkable Grano a Grano from a single vineyard in Quintanilla de Tres Barrios and a promising 12 Linajes Finca Los Arenales.

    • The production, aging, storage and bottling within the same winery
    • They must overcome compliance with the different requirements established in both the documentary control and the physical control (prior communication from the winery to the Regulatory Council, separate qualification and subsequent verification, traceability, capacity control of all their movements, etc.).

  • Gets into the Parker Club with its 90 points

Valdelacierva Garnacha 2016, from Bodegas Valdelacierva, achieves in its first vintage being part of the Parker Club with 90 points. The wine is an edition of 1997 elaborated bottles of a single farm: “la Pedriza” located in Tudelilla (Rioja Baja) and with only one variety: Garnacha. The line of work that Hispanobodegas wineries began several years ago aims to work in two lines in the development of their wines; one that meets the expectations of consumers seeking wines easy to drink, without complications, and another more special line of wines that are born from the terroir, with microvinifications in bocoyes to be able to make wines by farms and aging in French oak. In this way, only the small productions that each year gives the land come to the market. This is how Valdelacierva Garnacha was born, which, by its very essence, arises from Finca la Pedriza with unique characteristics and with a harvest that starts in the field and later in the winery, grows as wine.

  • Seafood Paella for two

    PREPARATION:

Dice the french onion. Clean and cut the cuttlefish in rings. Strain and reserve. Clean the prawns and scampi, strain and reserve. Clean the mussel shells and reserve in a separate plate from the rest of the seafood. Grate the tomato in a plate or bowl. You should have: 1 diced onion, 1 chopped garlic clove, 1 bowl with grated tomato. 1 plate with clean seafood (prawns, scampi and cuttlefish), 1 plate with clean mussels.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

Heat a wide flat pan/skillet (paellera) with the olive oil. Poach the onion gently. Add the seafood plate (prawns, scampi and cuttlefish) and then the chopped garlic. Poach for 3 minutes. Add the peas and then the grated tomato mix and fry gently for 3 minutes. Add fish stalk (1 cup) and heat gently while stirring with a wooden spoon. Add a pinch of saffron and continue stirring the mixture, allowing the saffron and seafood to infuse, then boil gently for 5 minutes.

Add the mussels and 1 cup of water. Boil for 15 minutes or until reduced. Once reduced, add the rice and mix well from the center of the pan towards the outside. Add a pinch of parsley and cover with water (the proportion should be 1 and ½ cups of water per 1 cup of rice). Correct with salt to taste and boil at high heat until the water has fully evaporated (around 20 minutes) without stirring -unilike with risotto, the aim is a tender rice not a creamy result- . Remove from heat source and cover the pan with a clean dry cloth for 5 minutes before serving -most paella lovers like the dish tepid rather than hot-. The brown rice layer formed at the bottom of a well cooked paella (called socarrat) is a prized Spanish delicacy.
