• An appointment in Canada, a new opportunity for Valdelacierva Reserva

The Canadian monopoly offers in its latest issue of its magazine “Vintages” a European wine special. How could it be otherwise, it makes a tour of the most recognized areas of the world of wine such as Bordeaux, Champagne, Rhone, Porto and with a very special stop in La Rioja. The magazine itself recognizes that Europe is home to many of the best wines as well as the most special regions for producing them. It highlights that it is the area where winemaking began and that it is now at a time where the variety and styles of wines continue to have the best wine collections to choose from. This month and on the occasion of this special, it introduces Valdelacierva Reserva 2014 as the only novelty in Rioja. A wine that highlights “impressive structure, with good tannins and balsamic acidity, in addition to offering flavors of plum and fig, with notes of well-rounded cocoa that makes it ideal to drink from now until 2030 ”.

Emma Villajos, winemaker at Bodegas Valdelacierva comments: “This good news gives a breather to the difficult situation the wine sector is going through, which finds a very marked break in most of the reference sales markets. Being the only wine introduced into the Canadian Monopoly helps us to continue working along the same lines of quality and with the hope that together we can continue to make the Rioja brand throughout the world. ”

  • The new image of Viña Gormaz, a benchmark in international design

    • “Packaging of the world”, one of the most important websites in the design industry selects the project of one of the wines from Hispanobodegas
    • The label represents the composition of the strata, levels and heights of the different plots of the winery in San Esteban.

Viña Gormaz, one of the wine range of Hispanobodegas, with wineries in Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Rueda, launches an image that reflects the types of soil where the Tempranillo and Verdejo varieties are collected. This concept has attracted the attention of the prestigious website “Packaging of the world” as an example of design in its European wine category. This new success of Hispanobodegas, joins the work of transformation and changes that the company has been carrying out for years and that involves not only a new design of the labels, but also a big investment in the wineries and a new work philosophy based on the value. “Packaging of the world”, with more than a thousand daily visits has selected for the first time a wine from Ribera del Duero to highlight the Spanish and European wine sections.

The Marketing department of the winery and Pablo Guerrero Studio have worked together to create the Viña Gormaz brand concept. In this new design, the interpretation of the soil strata plays a predominant and main role. Through icons assigned to each type of soil, Viña Gormaz expresses a set of textures and sizes that identifies each wine with the different types of terroir of the vineyard from which it comes. In a daring and minimalist design, the sandy, clays, stony lands are mixed… to become the best wines of Soria. The concept of the terroir is valued in Viña Gormaz with the identity, character and expression of the queen variety, Tinta del País (Tempranillo), in this area.

Viña Gormaz, the details of the label

The new labels of Viña Gormaz Young, Roble, Crianza and Verdejo have in common a design in relief, which trough the sense of touch emphasizes the characteristics of the soils of the vineyards where they come from. The Young is distinguished by sand and silt, which reflect the character of the tempranillo expressed in the terroir. The Roble, thanks to the mixture of clay and sand with a low amount of silt is the ideal combination for the development of the vineyard with this variety.  The elegance and structure of the Crianza is reflected in a black background which highlights the sum of sand, clay, rolling stones, minerals and multiple factors that enhance the aromas and the character of this Tempranillo with very low yields.

The Viña Gormaz family is completed with a white wine from D.O. Rueda produced by Bodegas GarciGrande (also part of Hispanobodegas). The image is inspired by the characteristics of the Verdejo variety, as well as the composition of silt and clay bottoms soils that give rise to this fragrant wine with a varietal character typical from its area.

Viña Gormaz, one of the brands part of the Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz family, from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, launches a new image that represents two significant differences in the province of  Soria, which are the altitude and the composition of the soil.  With this change, the winery highlights the differential value of the territory by indicating the differences in comparison with other zones: the altitude of the vineyards, the typicity and the composition of the soils, as well as the traditional working production in the land based on the age and the cultivation characteristics of the vineyards.

“The labelling system takes its creative inspiration from the visualisation of the different types of soils (or strata) where the wines grow: Sand, Silt, Clay, and Pebbles. The combination of the icons assigned to these mineral elements gives each wine a differentiated graphical profile: technical information expressed with an aesthetic purpose.”– expresses the designer Pablo Guerrero.

  • The Valdelacierva Reserva wines have been rated by Tim Atkin

The wines Valdelacierva Reserva, from the Spanish winery Bodegas Valdelacierva, have been part of the leading wines on the Rioja 2020 Special Report, written by Tim Atkin, one of the most important journalists in the world.

In their first vintage, these Valdelacierva Reserva already have an extensive list of medals and awards above 90 points, which are the result of a great effort in the winery, a philosophy based on the field and the artisanal production and limited editions.

Furthermore, on the special report, Tim Atkin explores the soils, the wine categories and the most special places in the D.O.Ca Rioja.

    About Valdelacierva Reserva 2014

On the article, Tim Atkin describes it as a fresh, chalky, nuanced Tempranillo with rose petal and forest floor aromas, nuanced tannins and a core of savoury, spicy fruit. With a production of 40,000 bottles, it is a wine with the vegan certification and a sophisticated and elegant image with the essence of the winemaker, Emma Villajos. Valdelacierva Reserva was born in a unique 50-year-old vineyard in Baños de Ebro and harvested manually. It has been aged for 24 months in American and French oak barrels respectively with a subsequent rounding in a 12-month bottle.

About Valdelacierva Reserva Limited Edition 2014

Based on the description by Tim Atkin, Valdelacierva Reserva Limited Edition shows a more modern, international style from Valdelacierva with plenty of colour and intensity, coffee bean and blackberry flavours and a firm, sinewy finish.  Its 3,245 bottles represent a symbiosis between pre- phylloxera vineyard and the excellence of the winemaker, who signs perfectly every listed bottle. About Bodegas Valdelacierva

Bodegas Valdelacierva is located in the heart of the Rioja Alta (Navarrete) and has more than 200 ha. of vineyards that are distributed in small plots with strains 25-130 years old.

The winery has a young and dynamic character and it is inclined towards the production of modern wines, with the seal of the land and the Tempranillo and Garnacha grape varieties as main elements. The wines from Bodegas Valdelacierva have the vegan certification and they come from selected vineyards of the best areas in Rioja. Its wines have been awarded worldwide and they are part of the best category in the D.O.Ca Rioja: VIÑEDO SINGULAR.

  • Let’s talk about soils

It is time to talk about soils…and the best to do it is with the new image of Viña Gormaz Crianza as inspiration. The composition of the strata, levels and heights of the different vineyard plots are the main differences we find among its range of the young, crianza (Ribera del Duero) and verdejo (Rueda).

The elegant features and structure that distinguish this red Crianza have their origin in the nature of the Ribera del Duero soriana; particularly, in the combination of the soil strata of the different plots that make up its assembly. The altitude of the vineyards (about 1,000 meters above sea level), the contrast of temperature between day and night, soil poverty, limited yields and demanding viticultural criteria are some of the factors that allow us to select Tempranillo grapes with a high concentration of aromas and a clear varietal expression, which are ennobled with the aging of this roble.

  • Harvest 2019- Hispanobodegas

    Harvest in GarciGrande – Rueda

    1. Weather conditions

The 2019 harvest in Rueda was determined by the following aspects:

    – A year of strong drought, both during the winter rest period and the vegetative cycle.

    – Maturation neither early nor late, in its usual time, a harvest with warm weather but without excessively high temperatures.

    1. Harvest data

This drought situation in Rueda has caused a reduction by 10% of the yields comparing to last year. However, due to the new plantations that have brought grapes, the harvest of the Denomination ended up arriving to 115 million kilograms of grapes. In GarciGrande, the harvest took place from September 12th to 26th, for the white grape, while the red wine grapes from Tierra de Castilla y León were harvested in the first days of October.

    1. Production

Verdejo grapes, from our usual vineyards of Rueda, La Seca and Nava del Rey, have been harvested at a good ripening point and with excellent sanitary conditions. In the oenological plane, wines have been obtained with a lot of extract, with a lot of mouth,  with a well-adjusted acidity and with a complex nose, full of citrus aromas and white fruits for the white wines, red fruits and licorice for the reds

The usual work with white musts has been followed in the cellar. Using dry ice to protect the grapes from the field. We continued the maceration the skin, in our macerator, in a good proportion, to extract all the aromatic potential of Verdejo. We have continued with the work of the sludge, in our small deposits of 20,000 L, to finish obtaining all the sweet and kind substances in the mouth that the musts polysaccharides give us. The fermentations have developed clean, with a good kinetics, developing spectacular citrus aromas, of white, creamy fruits, … Once the fermentation is finished, we continue with the aging of the deposits with their fine lees, they already carry more than one month and apparently we can continue with the process, mínimum one more month.

In the 2019 vintage we will have real Verdejos, Verdejos, pure GarciGrande essence. Our GarciGrande Verdejo, 12 Linajes and Viña Gormaz lines will once again be loaded with varietal, fennel, citrus aromas, with wide, creamy and fresh mouths. While for brands such as Mozares, or Garcigrande Verdejo-Viura, they continue to stand out for that extra point of sweetness along with the characteristic fruity aromas with tropical touches, from previous vintages. On the other hand Anier, as in previous years, we developed a part in 500 L barrels with subsequent aging in the same barrel and with its lees, to contribute to the final mixture that characteristic complexity that the wine has. On the other hand, Tempranillo red grapes, from vineyards of several villages in the provinces of Valladolid and Zamora, have been harvested with a good balance, obtaining wines of good color. Due to the gentle work done in the maceration, we will have very aromatic wines with fresh and round mouths.

Harvest 2019 in Rioja – Valdelacierva

One more year, the harvest in the Valdelacierva Winery brough us a great satisfaction.

From the grapes collected, more than 70% belong to the Rioja Alavesa and the rest distributed between Navarrete and Tudelilla.

In the production, we have worked more selectively with two reception lines:

    • Traditional hopper reception system with small capacity trailers.
    • In boxes with 24h of refrigerated truck at 4º to unload through the whole grain selection line to gravity-covered.

On the climatic and cycle data of the vine, we must highlight:

    • 25% less grapes than in 2018, which was a historic crop of Rioja in 2018 with a total of 486 million kg collected and 330 million liters protected.
    • In 2019: 375 million kilos of grapes in total of the region.
    • Good vegetative situation of the vineyard at the time of harvest, with an optimal sanitary state and a balanced vigor, less compact clusters and less weight of the berries positive parameters to determine a high quality vintage.
    • It has been a dry year, although “with rains in key moments of the cycle, including those difficult days of September, but, with the arrival of the north wind, the threat of botrytis was cut.

THE HIGH QUALITY OF THE GRAPE OF 2019 GUARANTEES ALL THE WINE RANKS THAT WE CURRENTLY COMMERCIALIZE.

New projects and interesting works in the search for improvement and trials within the winery.

    • Harvest of the singular vineyards: Cantogordo and Montepedriza.
    • R&D projects with new grape varieties and prototypes that help us to work the different varieties of Rioja: Sweet Malvasía or Garnacha Blanca with late harvest.

Harvest 2019 in Ribera del Duero – Gormaz

    Climatology and phenology.

The year 2019 has been a year characterized by a medium-low rainfall with respect to the last 10 years and very high maximum temperatures, the latter coinciding with the physiological state of flowering, causing a flower shift and therefore a harvest reduction in some areas of our vineyards. Both climatic factors have resulted in a 25% reduction in production in the Ribera del Duero, but it has also led to a high level of quality, which has been endorsed by the good weather. Thanks to the high temperatures experienced during the harvest days, they have allowed us to collect the grapes at the precise moment of ripening, making a separation of the various plots for the production of our most special wines.

    Productions

At the level of Ribera del Duero, 25% less has been taken than in the 2018 harvest (125.4 million kg), this is indicative of a maintenance and increase in market prices.

In Gormaz, values very similar to the 2018 harvest have been taken.

    Technical assessment of the crop

We can speak in general terms with a qualification from winery level as “Excellent”. The wines obtained are of high color and IPT, high alcohol content, very aromatic and balanced, with very silky tannin, elegant, good length and persistence. In short, the vintage is about aging wines that will surely be proven very long in time.

The wines have been made from the vineyard, making a plot selection level obtained very good results, so that we can transmit the land and be able to differentiate the old vineyard plots.

Grano a Grano has been made from our Quintanilla plots of old vineyards, 80-100 years old, to be sold in 2021. We have also developed several barrels of 500 kg of different plots of more than 100 years, of sandy land for our future “12 Linajes finca los arenales 2019” currently in the process of making malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels of 500 liters capacity.

  • The soils of the Ribera del Duero soriana acquire prominence in the new image of Viña Gormaz

Viña Gormaz, one of the brands part of the Viñedos y Bodegas Gormaz family, from Ribera del Duero, launches a new image that represents two significant differences in the province of  Soria, which are the altitude and the composition of the soil.  With this change, the winery highlights the differential value of the territory by indicating the differences in comparison with other zones: the altitude of the vineyards, the typicity and the composition of the soils, as well as the traditional working production in the land based on the age and the cultivation characteristics of the vineyards.

At the essence of respect, the rythym and the life cycles that the nature gives are essential in the production of Viña Gormaz. Those reinforce a solid image of the dedication to the vineyard and the production of the wines to keep them loyal to the terroir. In this new design, the interpretation of the stratums of the soil plays a very important and main role. Through icons assigned to each type of soil, Viña Gormaz expresses a set of textures and sizes that identify each wine with the different types of terroir they are composed.

In this way, in a dare and minimalistic design, sandy soils, clay, and pebbles textures are mixed in order to represent in the label the mix of soils from Soria. The concept of the terroir is valued in Viña Gormaz with the identity, character and expression of the main variety, Tinta el País (Tempranillo) in this area.
