• Wine-grower’s Diary – part 4

    Another crack at the fungi

June is a vital month for the proper development of the plant, and now is the time when we need to slip our boots on every day and pace every inch of our Garnacha vineyard. We begin the month with a second phytosanitary treatment to stop possible fungal diseases like mildew or powdery mildew. As always, in our coveted Montepedriza Garnacha we only use sulphur and copper: a 100% organic approach for one of our top vineyard plots.

    Farewell, secondary  shoots

During the second week of the month we begin the arduous but important task of trimming the vines, which consists of eliminating all those secondary shoots which could compete with the fruit-bearing shoots, or encourage an unwanted microclimate around the grape bunches (in terms of a lack of ventilation and increased humidity) which, in turn, might encourage disease or an uneven and incomplete ripening of the fruit.

    All work and no play…

It’s our favourite moment for various reasons. The weather is perfect for enjoying the vineyard; the flowering of the vines makes for an explosion of colour and aromas; we begin to get the first glimpse of what our harvest will look like…and above all we get a reward for a job well done: the barbecue in the vineyard with our Montepedriza Garnacha 2018. What more could we ask for? What’s more, in this very dry year June has seen a bit more rain, which will help us better manage the next stages of flowering and fruit set.

  • An appointment in Canada, a new opportunity for Valdelacierva Reserva

The Canadian monopoly offers in its latest issue of its magazine “Vintages” a European wine special. How could it be otherwise, it makes a tour of the most recognized areas of the world of wine such as Bordeaux, Champagne, Rhone, Porto and with a very special stop in La Rioja. The magazine itself recognizes that Europe is home to many of the best wines as well as the most special regions for producing them. It highlights that it is the area where winemaking began and that it is now at a time where the variety and styles of wines continue to have the best wine collections to choose from. This month and on the occasion of this special, it introduces Valdelacierva Reserva 2014 as the only novelty in Rioja. A wine that highlights “impressive structure, with good tannins and balsamic acidity, in addition to offering flavors of plum and fig, with notes of well-rounded cocoa that makes it ideal to drink from now until 2030 ”.

Emma Villajos, winemaker at Bodegas Valdelacierva comments: “This good news gives a breather to the difficult situation the wine sector is going through, which finds a very marked break in most of the reference sales markets. Being the only wine introduced into the Canadian Monopoly helps us to continue working along the same lines of quality and with the hope that together we can continue to make the Rioja brand throughout the world. ”

  • 12 Linajes Reserva 2014, the only Ribera del Duero with 93 points and “Editor’s Choice” in Wine Enthusiast.

The wine 12 Linajes Reserva 2014 has been valued with 93 points, while it has been named “Editor’s Choice” in the May edition of the American magazine Wine Enthusiast, one of the most renowned publications in the wine sector worldwide. The wine from Viñedos and Bodegas Gormaz has been uploaded to the podium as the only one of the D.O. Ribera del Duero to receive such a high score, which reaffirms the excellence and philosophy of the winery, based on respect for the terroir and the handmade production.

12 Linajes Reserva 2014 was born from a meticulous production, headed by the oenologist María José García, who with the help of a young and dynamic team, creates a wine coming from old vines in the most extreme zone in Ribera del Duero. The limit of its pre-philloxhera vineyard, the microclimates, as well as the altitude and the conditions of the surroundings, give the opportunity to produce wines full of personality, wines from Viñedos and Bodegas Gormaz.

    12 Linajes Reserva 2014

It is a Reserva born from a selection of plots with old strains of more than 80 years in Miño, Ines and Atauta and at an altitude of between 905 and 960 meters. The harvest is done manually, then the grape arrives to the winery, where the selection of the grape and its handmade production will begin. With 100% destemmed grapes, alcoholic fermentation at a moderate temperature (26ºC – 28ºC) and post-fermentation maceration depending on the anthocyanin-tannin ratio. 25% of the newly finished wine performs its malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Wine aging is 24 months in new French oak (70%); American (15%) of one year and (15%) of two years with refinement in bottle for at least 18 months. With a complex nose, predominance of mineral notes in a background of cherry jam combined with a subtle blend of roasted and smoked background. Powerful palate but with a step of silky and well-balanced tannins that make up a final that feels fatty with mineral and candied aftertaste.

  • Valdelacierva Rosé, among the best Rosé of 2018

With this tittle, Mi Vino magazine made a selection of the Roses of the 2018 harvest, and the list includes Valdelacierva Rosé. Furthermore, this Valdelacierva Rosé was the only Spanish wine in the event “Fashion Relief”, organized by Naomi Campbell.

We also highlight that the Grenache of this wine was born in one of the most important areas of the grape: Tudelilla.

Valdelacierva Rosé 2018, coming from de Garnacha in Tudelilla, Rioja.

The harvest 2018 of Bodegas Valdelacierva has arrived to introduce its new Valdelacierva Rosé, coming from La Rioja and with the signature of Tudelilla, land which produces excellent garnachas. Selection of grapes, direct bleeding and work on their own fine lees. This is how a great wine is produced. A luxury!

A Rosé with a very attractive pink color, pale, salmon-like. Its nose is intense, complex and expressive, with aromas of red fruits and flowers. The palate is sweet, with volume and balanced. Long and fresh aftertaste.
