Our Wines

Founded in 1988, the Bodegas Valdelacierva Winery is located in the heart of the Rioja Alta (Upper Rioja) Winegrowing Region in the picturesque town of Navarrete, a very important stop on the "Camino de Santiago".

The Officially Certified Winegrowing Region (Denominación de Origen):

Between 1945 and 1953 the body known as the Control Board was designed and incorporated, although numerous documentary references related to protecting the quality and guarantees of Rioja wines existed well before this period.

Rioja is a privileged region for growing vines and especially favourable for the aging of wines. It straddles the Ebro River for a distance of 100 km and its climate varies from one end to the other going from Mediterranean in the Rioja Baja (Lower Rioja) to eminently Atlantic in the Rioja Alta (Upper Rioja), something that guarantees a great diversity in the characteristics of its wines.

The area in which our winery and its vineyards are located is the so-called Rioja Alta (Upper Rioja) and represents around 40% of the total surface area of the Rioja Region. It contains different soil types, the most important of which are of a calcareous clay origin. The wines of this sub-area are noted for their medium alcohol content, body and high total acidity, making them extremely apt for aging in barrels..

The winery:

The soils in which our vineyards are planted and the climate in which our grapes grow are characteristic of the area. Most of our vineyards are planted on small plots and their vines are more than 30 years old, with the remainder planted on large non-irrigated plots of alluvial soils close to rivers and full of pebbles,  which help control humidity when the vines are under greatest stress due to water deprivation. These soil characteristics, help to produce young wines of great vigour and freshness which, once they have been aged, provide refined, smooth top-quality aged and vintage wines.

Our Vineyards: Bodegas Valdelacierva currently has 200 hectares controlled under long-term agreements we have with independent growers in the area, which enable us to become directly involved in the grape ripening and selection processes and thereby be able to guarantee maximum quality year after year.

Grape varieties:

Tempranillo: this is the representative variety of the region and the one that imposes the character of our red wines.
